What Chinese Diabolo Means
The diabolo is the spinoff of the
Chinese yoyo or bamboo bell, but both work, behave almost the same way, and can
be used to play spinning games. The basic and noticeable differences are;
a.
the way
they are constructed,
b.
The material used to make them. And
c.
Their shape.
The bamboo bell has it holes
drilled at the side of the cone part and this is the reason why it gives very
distinct humming sound when it is spun. It is made from bamboo or wood. Diabolo
or the modern yoyo on the other hand is made from plastic, rubber or
combination of both. Some are even made from metal. The modern yoyos have axles
that are narrower than the bamboo bell and this is what makes their strings to
be thinner than the string used to spin the bamboo bell.
Nowadays, there are Chinese diaboloapparatus,
which are hybrids of both the bamboo bell and the modern yoyo. These hybrids
are constructed with more elastic rubber/plastic that prevents them from
deforming with age. They also have their holes drilled at similar place like in
the bamboo bell and they have wide axles, which make them to use thick strings
and elicit snoring sound similar to those of the ancient bamboo bell. However,
both can be used to perform all tricks of which some will be briefly described
here.
ü
The Trapeze or Stopover trick involves allowing
the yoyo to go under a baton while it is touching the spring. This will
automatically make the yoyo to rotate along the baton and land back on the
rope.
ü
Suicide release, whereby the player will set
free one baton by throwing it in the air and later catch it again after it has
swung round the yoyo.
ü
The Sun, where the diabolo yoyo is swung around
both batons in a circular way and completing the trick with the string twisted
twice above the yoyo.
