Matcha powder is the finely ground powder of green tea leaves. What makes Matcha stand out is the way the plants are grown – they are shade grown for three weeks before being harvested. During this period, the absence of sunlight increases the theanine and caffeine content in the plant leaves, making them vibrantly green. This combination of nutrients gives matcha its unique properties and has made it the latest health drink of choice.
Matcha – calorie free food?
Matcha is being called a calorie free drink because of the way it is made. It is essentially just matcha powder whisked into hot water. 2-3 grams of powder are used to make one cup. The end result is a dense green drink, with a frothy finish. Matcha tea looks more like vegan wheat grass juice than traditional green tea. You are supposed to consume the tea powder along with the drink – in regular tea the powder would be strained out.
If drunk this way, matcha calories would be calculated based on the weight of the powder used. 1 gram of matcha powder has 3 calories – so your average cup of matcha tea would have 3-9 calories, depending on how much powder was whisked in.
